北宋末年，朝廷局势动荡不安，奸臣当道，不少忠良之士多受排挤陷害，纷纷起来反抗。朝廷和正义的对抗是故事最大的冲突点，故事暴露了封建统治阶级的残暴和腐朽，揭露了当时的社会矛盾。林冲、鲁智深、宋江是正义的代表，反面角色即代表着朝廷，其中有位高权重，忠奸不分的高太尉；市井一霸“镇关西”；为谋取私利，背信弃义的陆谦；阿谀奉承，阴险狡诈的黄文炳。林冲、鲁智深、宋江等人饱受迫害，他们不满朝廷腐败黑暗，被朝廷逼得走投无路，纷纷在梁山水泊聚义，开始了劫富济贫，替天行道之路……最后同意招安却以失败告终。
