森の中で元海軍少佐ヘイズの死体が見つかる。死体の身元を知ったダッキーは、捜査から外れると宣言。ヘイズは服役中の息子の冤罪を晴らすべく、ダッキーが所属するミステリー愛好会“シャーロック推理研究会”に調査を依頼していたのだ。トニーとマクギーが森の中で手掛かりを探す一方、ギブスとビショップはヘイズが真犯人だと疑っていた消防士の元へ。さらに研究会の本部を訪れるのだが、曲者ぞろいの会員たちは捜査協力を拒む。
