红军军部令坚守7天阻敌援军，李克武与陈宝明决意死守。国军高层震怒，斥李朝信夺回阵地，李怀疑林俊卿投共。林因消极内战被调边区，直到抗战爆发后随川军出征。红军与国军炮战伤亡惨重，黑老潘等战士英勇作战，张思德唤醒受伤昏迷的陈宝明。独立团与国军血战昼夜，李朝信困死守军的毒计下，阵地上断水缺粮，陈宝明将最后一滴水喂给伤员。关键时刻，张思德觅得水源，取水时遭遇敌机轰炸。刘光友担忧张思德的安危。独立团战士冒死插军旗，掩护其余战友撤退。李朝信胜券在握，发起总攻。当国军士兵冲上馒头岭，突然从山洞里跃出满身血污的红军战士——军旗不倒，战魂未灭，独立团残部以决死之势扑向敌军，让骄横的李朝信尝到了教训。
