故事发生在日本战国时期，里见义实（长冢京三 饰）因为处死了玉梓（菅野美穗 饰）而遭到了玉梓的诅咒，诅咒里见的后代世代为犬出生。伏姬（仲间由纪惠 饰）是里见的女儿，怀有身孕的她和金碗大辅（渡部笃郎 饰）在逃亡的途中遇见了玉梓的亡灵，玉梓预言伏姬的孩子会成为人间祸害，绝望之中，伏姬决定自杀。 就在伏姬死亡的那一瞬间，她腹中的孩子出世分裂为八股“气”，附在了伏姬所佩戴的八颗念珠之上，散落在世间各处，悲痛的金碗大辅则剃度为僧，游历世间，企图将八颗念珠一一寻回。八颗念珠幻化成为了八个姓氏里有“犬”字，身上长有胎记的婴孩，在宿命的引导下，他们相遇了。
